MODULE-6 Smart Growth Opportunities

Case Study:
Open Space Residential Design (OSRD)

Rural Cluster Subdivision
Spokane County, Washington

Spokane County is a rural county of Washington State that has an agriculturally-based economy and culture. In order to protect farmlands from sprawling development, Spokane officials developed an Open Space Cluster subdivision ordinance: Spokane County Code Ch. 14.820 - Rural Cluster Development (in Ch. 14.808-.826). This code enables flexible site design and higher residential densities in less sensitive areas, leaving agricultural lands open for use and long-term protection.
