The Virginia Department of Health (VDH), with support from U.S. EPA Region 3, will host a series of regional emergency preparedness trainings and tabletop exercises for the water sector. The training and tabletop exercise will bring together local drinking water and wastewater service providers and other emergency responders to provide response training, enhance coordination and communication between all responders, improve understanding of emergency roles and responsibilities, and allow participants to discuss steps to be taken now to better prepare for a future water sector-specific incident.

This 1-day training will consist of a half day of ICS and NIMS refresher training, followed by a facilitated tabletop exercise. The morning will consist of a review of the key elements of the ICS and the five components comprising the NIMS. During the second half of the day participants will have the opportunity to discuss plans, policies and procedures and to evaluate the components needed to guide the prevention of, response to and recovery from a scenario designed for the water sector. The tabletop exercise is designed to foster discussion among response partners from the local, county and state levels. The overarching goal of the training is to foster a better understanding of the roles, responsibilities and capabilities of the partner agencies/organizations that would respond to an incident involving the water sector.
VDH will be awarding CPE hours for water and wastewater operators for this 1-day training.
The training is free, and is open to all community waterworks with a ground water source serving a population over 3,300. For the tabletop exercise in Wytheville, attendance is open to all community waterworks with a surface water source serving a population over 3,300. In addition, other ground waterworks, not in the specified size range, but in close proximity to any of the training sites, and wastewater works are also welcome to attend. Public safety personnel will also be invited. There are no prerequisites for participating in this workshop.
